My Advice to the Democrats

Now. Right now, you have to start mending fences, not only with the Republicans but with the people of your own party that you have alienated over the years, like Joe Lieberman and me.

If you think I'm talking through my hat here, you need to consider two things. One, you've only got a scant majority on the two houses. Youâ€™ve been here before and you have to be able to remember that itâ€™s far too easy for one or two votes to jump the aisle. Two, if you don't think that there are people (and not just Republicans) itching to portray Speaker Pelosi as a Madame DeFarge, youâ€™re deluding yourselves.

The President has taken the first step, which means you are already a step behind. He has cut lose his lightning-rod Defense Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and nominated a man who has been critical of our course in Iraq.

One favor you can do yourselves would be to affirm Robert Gates as quickly and unanimously as you can. Dump the "long overdue" rhetoric, roll up your sleeves and move on. Gloating will derail any positive efforts that the party may make.

I do not share the idea that this is a good turn of events. I do not look favorably on the return to majority if the party of my youth. I am dismayed by the alternatives to Donald Rumsfeld and disturbed that so many do not, or will not, grasp the essentials of the strategy that has been undertaken and demand instantaneous gratification in a war. But I only had one vote, I cast it and found myself on the short end. I won't waste time on what could have been or what I would have wished. Weâ€™ve had plenty of examples of that over the last six years.
