Top Ten Reasons to be Deployed in New Orleans
18.9.05
The disillusionment is beginning to settle in. Major John at Miserable Donuts expressed a resemblance to a train wreck and I see his point and we of the Oklahoma contingent will raise him by 10. The list will be followed by explanation and a paraphraseof sentiments expressed by a friend in the California Guard who is also here.

10. Didn't really want that promotion at work anyway. (For the self-employed: Didn't want to keep those customers; too much of a pain anyway.)

9. Free time is way overrated.

8. Would have spent way too much on gas during that long awated Labor Day weekend vacation I had planned.

7. Always wanted to see what it is like to be a street person living in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

6. Had always dreamed of what it would be like to invade a major American city with little advance notice or planning.

5. Hey, should get some free BDUs after they loose mine in the laundry.

4. Didn't get enough MREs during Enduring Freedom deployment.

3. Think of all the money I won't spend because there is nothing to spend it on down here.

2. Get to have a 160 person slumber party in a high school Cafeteria!

and the Number One reason to be deployed to New Orleans......

1. It was the only way I knew to get out of having to go to PLDC!

(hat tip to Major Nixon who formulated these)

My friend in California tells me that they received an 'immediate' priority mission to provide a soldiers to local officials for an 'urgent requirement.'

An immedeate response followed in order to comply (which is no small thing for the Army--thePowerPoint presentations alone are half the battle) and within 20 minutes a modest task force was racing to the endangered location.

The emergency mission was to guard . . . a Wal-Mart (Not the one we just left). Apparently from the people roller blading, jogging and driving expensive SUVs.

The mission now is, apparently, "to provide reassurance to returning residents." (That these are well-to-do, moderatley connected residetns is immaterial right?)

It's all be come rather disappointing. I came in the hopes of helping people cope with this tremendous upheaval. Instead, I make sure the LTC's pringter works and that the Breifing Slides are up-to-date.

I also ensure that the poor non-staff pogues downstairs don't drink from the coffee pot up here in the Joint Operations Center.

Add to it the message from my friend that seems to validate some of the classist allegations after-the-fact. Don't misunderstand. I do not believe that anyone was helped or not helped based on their race or income level. But now in the calm after, it does appear that the "better" neighborhoods are getting the higher benefit of the available security.

Then thay talk about us perhaps being here for 90 days total. I don't know.

All things considered, If I have to be away from home, I'd rather be in Iraq or Afghanistan.
